Background of the study
Foreign direct investment (FDI) plays a pivotal role in driving economic development by introducing capital, technology, and managerial expertise. In Ogun State, the manufacturing sector has experienced transformation through increased FDI inflows from 2000 to 2020. These investments have led to modernized production processes, expanded operational capacities, and enhanced competitiveness, which in turn contribute to significant job creation (Ibrahim, 2023). Empirical evidence suggests that FDI not only boosts productivity but also facilitates skill development and improves labor market dynamics. However, challenges such as regulatory bottlenecks, infrastructural deficits, and a lack of local capacity sometimes limit the full potential of FDI in generating employment (Chinwe, 2024). This study appraises the influence of FDI on job creation in Ogun State’s manufacturing sector, analyzing the mechanisms through which investment inflows lead to employment opportunities and identifying factors that moderate this relationship (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite increased FDI in Ogun State, job creation in the manufacturing sector remains below expectations due to regulatory challenges, infrastructural weaknesses, and insufficient integration with local labor markets (Ibrahim, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These factors limit the employment benefits of FDI and hinder sustainable industrial growth. The study aims to identify these barriers and propose measures to optimize FDI’s role in job creation.
